1st day

We leave Ulan Bator at 9 o’clock and head towards the famous sand dunes of Elsen Taserkhay. We’ll drive about 250 Km until late afternoon. These sand dunes are a geological anomaly whose appearance and plant life resembles the great Gobi desert much further south.

2nd day

On the second day after a two hours drive we reach Kharkhorin (also called Karakorum, 130 km, 4 hours driving), site of the 13th century capital of the Mongolian Empire created by Chinggis Khan. Very little is left from this legendary city. In the 16th century, Mongolia's biggest Monastery was build from the ruins of Kharkhorin. We will explore the grounds of Erdene Zuu Monastery surrounded by its massive 400 m X 400 m walls. We will be guided around the 3 remaining temples: Dalai Lama, Zuu of Buddha and Lavrin Temple. We will also see the Turtle Rock and the Phallic Rock.

Later that day we will go on driving to Ogii Nuur. Ogii Nuur is one of the most beautiful lakes of Mongolia offering great fishing possibilities and beautiful spots to camp.

3rd until 5th day

We’ll drive for and we will reach our canoeing expedition starting point.

The country we will traverse by canoe is among the best grazing ground in Mongolia and the steppe teems with horses, sheep and goats. Eagles, hawks and vultures circle above and there’s a wealth of all kind of water fowl in the river.

Often, children bathing in the river will great us. We’ll stop by families living along the river and we’ll taste the airak, fermented horse milk.
